Kaylia Nemour Becomes First Algerian to Win Gold at Olympics

Kaylia Nemour won Algeria's first Olympic gold medal in gymnastics with a thrilling uneven bars routine at the Paris 2024 Olympics, becoming the first African gymnast to achieve this feat.

Originally from France, Nemour chose to compete for Algeria due to a dispute with the French gymnastics federation and her club, embracing her father's Algerian nationality.

Scoring 15.7, Nemour tied for the highest score in any event at the Olympics, showcasing her athleticism and technical skill with complex maneuvers.

She is the 2023 world uneven bars silver medalist and the 2023 African all-around champion.

China's Qiyuan Qiu secured silver with a score of 15.500, and Team USA's Suni Lee won bronze with a 14.800.

Despite representing Algeria, Nemour felt at home competing in Paris and received a warm ovation after her historic win, proudly displaying the Algerian flag.

In the team qualifiers, she had the top score on the uneven bars with 15.600 and placed 32nd in balance beam qualifying.
